From 1881 until 1994 the Glorious Glosters were a line of infantry, formally known as the Gloucestershire Regiment and part of the British Army. Known for their bravery they served in numerous conflicts, including World War I and the Korean War. They inherited the unique privilege of wearing a badge on the back of their headdresses as well as the front, after they fought bravely in two ranks back-to-back at the Battle of Alexandria in 1801.
The modern-day City of Gloucester is where the regiment was best-known and historically served, the local residents still actively remember and honour these incredibly brave men through exhibits like the one at the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum. Situated within close proximity of their magnificent Gothic style Cathedral that originated with the establishment of a minster, founded by Osric, King of the Hwicce, around the year 679. This beautiful Cathedral is now a Grade I listed building where Bishops and Kings lay side by side in the State.
