1. The first call was made in 1973
The first mobile phone call was made on 3 April 1973. Martin Cooper, an engineer at Motorola, made it in New York, calling Joel Engel, an engineer from rival AT&T. He then gave a press conference to announce the development.
2. The first smartphone was made in 1997
The first smartphone was the Ericsson GS88 Penelope. This was the release that transformed the mobile phone market and began to transform simple calling devices into full entertainment and information centres in micro handsets.
3. Other call device markets began to decline
